Community Center

Our community center is the change we envision for the community. We envision a community working together for a common cause and pride ourselves in uplifting and encouraging our community to be active. In Los Angeles, homelessness is a significant problem. There are so many challenges that we don’t know where to begin. However, while the solutions are being figured out, there is a significant amount of people who have lost hope, are broken and have forgotten about their highest potential. Our organization recognized that all though we don’t have all the answers, there is still something we can do to lift the spirits of our homeless community. Annually, we pack care kits for the homeless. Our care kits are not the solution to a huge problem, but what it does do is bring hope, inspire, and hopefully remind our community what is possible when we come together.

ITEMS WE LIKE TO INCLUDE:

A typical Care Kit consists of a watertight gallon-size zipper lock plastic bag filled with items like:

  • Water bottle

  • Socks

  • Tuna and crackers

  • Granola Bar or cereal bar

  • Fruit snack or applesauce cup

  • Crackers with peanut butter or cheese

  • Gift certificate to fast food

  • Hand wipes

  • Pack of Kleenex

  • Maxi pads

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste

  • Nail clippers

  • Band Aids

  • Chapstick

  • Comb or small brush

  • Mints, cough drops or gum

  • Mini Fliers with ways the Mission can meet their needs

  • Note of encouragement

SelfActualize me partners with TheraBasics to help break mental health stigma

Breaking Mental Health Stigma, one box at a time.
— Dr. Raven Barrow

SelfActualize me is partnering with TheraBasics to ensure that the community become empowered consumers of mental health therapy. TheraBasics created a line of products that we think will transform the experience of therapy. The products are easy to use, designed to help organize therapeutic interventions, integrate notes, and incorporate client-centered goals into daily life. We are actively trying to reduce the mental health stigma by getting people excited about therapy.

“More than half of people with mental illness don't seek help for their disorders.” Many people avoid or delay seeking treatment due to many fears. That's because stigma, prejudice, and discrimination against people with mental illness is still very much a problem (American Psychological Association, 2020)”

According to the American Psychological Association, stigma and discrimination can make mental health symptoms worse and can create additional problems such as:

  • reduced hope

  • lower self-esteem

  • increased psychiatric symptoms

  • difficulties with social relationships

  • reduced likelihood of staying with treatment

  • more difficulties at work

We must break the stigma. Many celebrities, such as Demi Lovato, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Michael Phelps, Taraji P. Henson, and Lady Gaga, are opening up and sharing their struggles with mental illness. They have made the conversations more comfortable.

Deciding to go to therapy is not a huge step; it is a natural step. An important step that we would like to make a little easier. Like in school, you need to have all of your tools to be successful for a class; you need those same therapy tools.

TheraBasics have created a line of products so that clients can feel empowered when they have their first therapy session. SelfActualizeMe will be donating mental health boxes to those in need.
